Encountering the Foreign in Alice in Wonderland and its Arabic Translations

This study examines Lewis Carroll’s Alice through the cultural glass of Arabic translations in Wonderland by Amira Kiwan (2003), Shakir Nasr Al Deen (2012), Siham Bint Saniya (2013), and Nadia Kholy Through Looking-Glass (2013). It seeks to explore engagement several issues language meaning, foreignness otherness, both with aid a simultaneous examination how key moments works are translated into Arabic. exploration, cross-disciplinary that combines close-reading post-colonial literary analysis Venuti’s identification domestication foreignization as strategies translation, sheds light on original or source texts (STs) target (TTs) transmit them their respective Egyptian, Jordanian, Moroccan Arab readers. The emerges is divided one, simultaneously learner guardian rules language, explorer-foreigner imperialist, vulnerable child, tyrannical queen. In TTs there also split between sophistication playful childhood nonsense, difficult text celebration local culture. Further, treated translators at once entertaining adventure domesticated tastes complex allegory whose political source-text preserved adjusted for more sophisticated adult audience.
